Examples of Work

Alder Consulting, and the company's founder, Laura S. Quinn, have created dozens of internet solutions for both nonprofit and corporate clients. Below are a few examples.

InfoQuest Anatomy Interactive
InfoQuest, a paleontology organization dedicated to making basic science concepts accessible, wanted to create an interactive module that would help middle-school age kids learn about evolution and their own anatomy. Alder designed a Flash interactive in which kids discover a dinosaur fossil and then put the bones together in the correct configuration using their own skeleton as a reference.

This interactive is still in development.

Annie E. Casey Foundation User Research and Website Navigation
Alder Consulting was hired by Beaconfire Consulting to design a navigation structure for the new Annie E. Casey Foundation website. This website will provide access to thousands of different resources in AECF’s diverse areas of interest – an invaluable resource, but a challenge to organize so that their many audiences can find what they need. Alder led a complicated card-sort user research study to understand how each of 23 different participants mentally grouped this information. We then created a website navigation structure and metadata scheme to translate this user research into a friendly, straightforward, and eminently useful organization scheme.

Patient Visit Redesign Website
Working with Coleman Associates, a national leader in healthcare process design, Alder created a website that provides rich information for hospitals and clinics who would like to redesign their practice to become more patient friendly. The site provides extensive articles, tools, and case studies, along with a section that highlights Coleman Associates’ services. Everything on the site can be updated by non-technical administrators.

Fresh Air Fund Website Review
Alder Consulting conducted a detailed website review for The Fresh Air Fund. We conducted a workshop to understand the goals, audience, and desired brand for the website, looked through the site in detail, and analyzed the weblogs. We then created a detailed presentation that outlines challenges and recommendations for key areas of the site including the homepage, overall navigation, online donations, and potential long term additions. The Fresh Air Fund was so happy with the work that they hired Alder Consulting to design a new website that incorporates these recommendations.

Wave Hill Website
Alder Consulting worked with Wave Hill, a public garden in the Bronx, to create a beautiful, friendly, and easily updateable website. Wave Hill needed to showcase their hundreds of garden photos, publicize their many events, and provide useful visitor’s information– all on a limited budget.  The entire site can be easily updated through a combination of web-based and WYSIWYG editors.

InfoQuest Website Strategy
InfoQuest, a paleontology education organization, wanted to build a robust website to allow middle-school age kids to undertake interactive "virtual expeditions." These expeditions would teach them about paleontology and basic scientific principles. Alder Consulting found them an educational partner - TryScience.org - and worked with both organizations to define and budget an ambitious web-based experience.

New York Council for the Humanities Website
Alder Consulting worked with the New York arm of the National Endowment for the Humanities to completely revamp their web presence. In addition to information about their grants and programs, the website includes sophisticated features to search through the Council’s catalog of hundreds of humanities lectures. The lectures are extensively cross-listed to allow visitors to browse by the categories that make sense to them, and then to find affiliated lectures.

DreamYard Website
In the fall of 2001, DreamYard - an organization which partners artists with New York City public schools - had only a single-page website. Although DreamYard had received grant money to build a more robust site, they had so many ideas for the website that they didn't know where to start. Alder helped them to create a complex site that provides inspiration and lesson plans for students and teachers who want to include art in their classrooms.

Data entry forms allow inexperienced users to easily add data without errors, while tally sheets and charts provide the information that funders desired.

The Angelman Project Online Video Database Definition
Alder worked with a nonprofit film production company to create a conceptual design for their online video database and write three different grant proposals. The site will allow users to search text, pictures, and over fifty hours of streaming video clips providing diagnosis and treatment information for a rare genetic disorder called Angelman syndrome.

Turning Point of Lehigh Valley Website
Laura S. Quinn, Alder's founder, planned, managed, and wrote all the text for a website to help Turning Point, a women's shelter, communicate with their constituents.
